About the College of Arts and Architecture

The College of Arts & Architecture advances studio-based learning, critical studies and public art, providing an experience that is unique to our region and vital to the world.

The College includes the Schools of Architecture, Art, Music and Film and Photography.

Disciplinary-accredited professional schools offer programs that span traditional areas of study, such as the fine arts, to the highly technical emerging fields such as music technology. Nationally-recognized programs in architecture and film draw significant numbers of out-of-state students.

Our programs:

• Educate over 1,200 students majoring in the arts or architecture.
• Teach 25 core courses in the arts that include studio time and lectures.
• Deliver exceptional instruction with intensive hands-on studio experiences.
• Offer unique programs that are especially well suited to MSU academically and geographically.
• Remain critical to the state–providing professional architects, designers and music educators in virtually every community.
• Continuously evolve to become more globally connected and responsible.

Meet Jacob...

Until his senior year of high school, in Columbus, Montana, Jacob didn’t think he would attend college.

“I didn’t think I was going to college because I wouldn’t have the opportunity to,” Jacob said. “We couldn’t afford that. If it wasn’t for scholarships, I wouldn’t be here in the first place.”

The Dean’s Excellence Fund can help students like Jacob when they need resources to pursue their dreams or when they face struggles or challenges. But those funds only exist if donors like you give. Your gift, of any amount, makes a difference for our arts and architecture students.

Jacob is grateful for the support he has received from donors like you. Thanks to our caring community of supporters, this spring, with the MSU class of 2025, Jacob plans to graduate with a degree in environmental design. He will begin his pursuit of a master’s degree in architecture at MSU the following fall.

“I am committed to a serious study of architecture, building a foundation of design knowledge and methods in order to understand and better contribute to the world of computational design. Having interest in installation illustration since I was 10, I found growing up in Columbus, Montana, was a bit of a struggle as ideas felt far-fetched. But I have found architecture intriguing and full of opportunities for students like me. I am excited to help address some of the wicked problems revolving around the field today,” Jacob said.

He is thankful for alumni and friends who want to stay connected to today’s students and make a difference for them. And he has worked hard to take full advantage of the gift of a college education at MSU, seeking challenging and diverse course loads and pursing all opportunities. He is also appreciative to receive a stipend to study architecture abroad in France this spring.

“So many architectural feats have happened in France, especially in Paris,” Jacob said. “I can’t wait to see it all. Your support helps students like me continue their education and engage with this university and its many opportunities. I truly appreciate your generosity.”

The impact of your gift

As the state’s public land-grant university, MSU relies on private financial support to advance its mission by sustaining and growing educational opportunities. By contributing to the Dean’s Excellence Fund, you open the door to expanded experiences for students, including opportunities to conduct research, attend an academic conference, participate in outreach, take on leadership roles in student activities or apply their knowledge and creativity to a project.
